If a large amount of thermal mass is required, a low-carbon footprint aimed for and the dead weight needs to be kept to a minimum, the ebb™ PCM Clay Board enriched with BASF's microencapsulated Phase Change Material Micronal© is the solution.
With 3kg/m2 of Micronal© and a weight of only 15kg/m2 the ebb™ PCM Clay Board achieves a total storage capacity of 110Wh/m2 over a small temperature range of only 5 Kelvin and can so function as a very efficient heat sink.
The risk of summer overheating is very much reduced and during winter any thermal gain can be maximised.
A well-insulated building combining thermally lightweight materials and the ebb™ PCM Clay Board, performs like a lightweight AND a heavyweight building: it can be heated up quickly (passively or actively) to a defined temperature point, from which on the ebb© boards will store any further thermal energy, thus stopping the room temperature to rise any more. During summer the stored thermal energy can be dispersed by cool night air ventilation and during winter the energy is radiated back into the room once the temperature falls and the Micronal© begins to solidify.
But the ebb™ PCM Clay Boards work equally well in retrofit projects. Many existing buildings are already getting too warm today and are requiring electricity guzzling air-conditioning systems. In a future climate change scenario those buildings will be many more.
