Solar Decathlon Europe 2010 in Madrid
Last Summer Eco Building Boards / Lebast has been able to support the German Team "LivingEquia" from Berlin at the Solar Decathlon Europe in Madrid with some of their Function Boards. One major task during the competition was to keep the internal temperature within a narrow margin. In order to achieve this a number of ebb's Clay Climate Elements were fitted at the ceiling and chilled by circulating cold water through the integrated pipes.
To further support this low-energy temperature management approach and to prevent the overheating during the (very) hot summer days in Madrid, the internal walls were lined with ebb's Clay Building Boards with Latent Heat Storage Material. By adding some Phase Change Material (PCM) to the clay mix, the thermal mass of the boards is significantly increased. At a temperature of 26 deg.Celsius the microencapsulated PCM begins to melt and thus absorbs the heat from the room. By simply ventilating the room during the night, or additionaly circulating cold water, the stored thermal energy can be dissipated to the exterior of the building. The wall & ceiling surfaces were finished with a fine clay plaster.
